What are some books every Christian should read? While the Bible must always remain the foundation of our faith and spiritual growth, good books can help us think more deeply, understand Scripture better, and learn from the wisdom and experience of others.
Over the years, several books have challenged my thinking and strengthened different areas of my Christian life. Some helped me become a better reader, others helped me understand Jewish perspectives, defend the Christian faith, or grow in prayer.
Here are five books every Christian should read—or at least consider adding to their reading list.
Of course, no Christian book can replace the Bible. If your time for reading is limited, make Scripture your priority. The Bible is the Word of God, while every other Christian book should ultimately help us understand, apply, or think more carefully about biblical truth.
Reading good books can strengthen our thinking, but this becomes especially important for those who influence others. Here are several books for Christian leaders that can encourage continued growth and learning.
1. How to Read a Book — Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren
If you never read this book maybe it is time for you to read it. It is a long book, but it is worth reading it, especially if you love reading. Needless to say that until I read this book, I thought I am a good reader. However, this book demolished many wrong ideas I had about reading and boosted my reading skills to new levels. The author describes the four levels of reading and that reading can be hard work.
Many Seminary professors recommend this book to their students. Indeed, one can develop his reading tremendously through the insights presented here. It is worth the money!
2. You Shall Be Holy — Joseph Telushkin
I had to read this book for one of my Seminary courses this year. (Especially Vol. II- Love your neighbor as yourself). It is not a Christian book. However, if anyone wants to learn more about the Jewish people and gain some Jewish insights, these books can be a great help.
The author is a great scholar and touches subjects like free will & the human nature, repentance, humility, anger, gossip, the fear of God, vegetarianism, etc. He covers many essential topics about life and God. Therefore, it should be read by any person who is interested in ethics from a Jewish perspective.
3. Answering Jewish Objections to Jesus — Michael L. Brown
Michael L. Brown wrote Answering Jewish Objections to Jesus, to refute the objections of the Rabbis and to provide intellectually substantial responses for the Jewish people concerning Yeshua/Jesus the Messiah of Israel. Therefore, it is a must-read for any person who loves Israel and wants to be more efficient in his ministry or knowledge about the Jewish people and Israel. So, if you have Jewish friends, neighbors or acquaintances, make sure you read this book! Dr. Brown has a lot to offer. And he touches some of the most challenging questions a Jewish person can have towards Jesus. It is a masterpiece!
4. A Lawyer’s Case for His Faith — Jim Jacob
It is the testimony of a Jewish person who came to know Jesus/Yeshua the true Messiah of Israel. Moreover, it is a book that brings intelligent answers about God and the life of Jesus. Therefore, if you have an unbelieving Jewish friend or just someone who does not believe in God, give him this book. Indeed, it is an excellent book to read for any believer, Jew or Gentile.
5. Rees Howells, Intercessor — Norman Grubb
This book is about the life of Rees Howells— a great man of God from the past century. Moreover, I have gained many precious gems from this book! And I cannot say enough how blessed I am after reading it. Therefore, if you have not read it, make sure you grab a copy of it and start reading this book. Needless to say, I am sure I will go back to it many times and reread it.
How to Choose Books That Strengthen Your Christian Faith
Not every popular Christian book is necessarily a helpful one. Read with discernment and compare what an author teaches with Scripture. A good Christian book should ultimately drive you back to God’s Word, deepen your understanding of truth, strengthen your relationship with Christ, or equip you to serve others more faithfully.
These are only a few books that have influenced my thinking and Christian life. Your reading list will look different, but the goal should remain the same: read books that help you think biblically, know God more deeply, and live your faith more faithfully.
