In this post, I want to continue in showing three more ways in which you and I are led by the Spirit of God.
God did not change
There are countless ways through which God can lead His people. And I am not planning to cover all of them. First, because I do not know all of them. God is the Creator of the Universe with everything there is in it, but He is also creative. And He is creative in His ways to communicate with His people. Second, I want to focus on the primary ways or the most important ways God is using, according to my understanding.
I feel I need to mention the golden principle again— anything needs to be viewed through the Bible. If something does not align with the principles of the Holy Scriptures, do not move forward.
However, I am one of those believers who believes that God did not change. And just like Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8), I believe the Holy Spirit did not change. I believe the Holy Spirit manifests Himself in the same ways as in the book of Acts and the life of the first disciples of Jesus.
Therefore, I want to talk briefly about three more ways God is using to lead us in His ways:
1. You are led by the Spirit of God through promptings
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
There are many things we can learn from this short verse. One of them is that the Spirit of God is leading God’s children. And as I stated at the beginning of my post, He did not change. Moreover, Matthew 4:1 (ESV) is one of the verses we can see that Jesus Himself was led by the Spirit of God
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Believers are using different words like promptings, leadings or unction to describe the leading of the Holy Spirit. Or some will tell they received a burden from God to do a certain thing like to start an orphanage or donate money to a specific ministry or to pray for someone. And they are not able to explain in words everything. But intuitively they sense God wants them to do a particular thing or move in a specific direction.
Usually, I feel this kind of promptings when God is leading me to travel to India, Israel or other places. And actually, I am praying right now for a trip to India at the end of September. Somehow I know it is the right time to go back there and encourage my brothers. However, in the past, I made many errors in learning how to let myself be led by God. But this is fine as one learns by making mistakes even though my purpose was not to make mistakes but to follow God wherever He is leading me. Nevertheless, I follow the principles I wrote in my previous post and this one.
2. You are led by the Spirit of God through quickenings
A quickening from God is when, for example, I read my Bible in a prayerful spirit and a scripture will become alive or will jump from the pages at me. I am sure you have experienced God speaking to you in this way many times. In one of my posts, I have written how I do have fellowship with God through the Scriptures.
When God quickens a scripture to you, He is doing that with a purpose. And your response is to stop and ask God what is He trying to tell you. He might want to lead you to do a certain thing, or He might lead you to repent of a specific sin, or He wants to comfort, discipline or give you counsel. You need to find out the answer by asking questions in a humble and prayerful attitude.
You might hear your Pastor speaking in your congregation, and his words just hit the center of your heart. Or you listen to a worship song and the Holy Spirit is using the lyrics of the song to give you direction. Often God is using a speaker at a Christian Radio or TV to provide you with the guidance you need.
Our duty is not to look after these experiences. We must focus on Jesus and when we sense God is quickening us in a specific way we should walk by faith.
3. You are led by the Spirit of God through other people
I have already mentioned in my previous posts about this way God is using to guide His people. Often when I am not sure about what direction to choose God will give me the answer through my parents or Pastors or my wife. And as a rule: if I do not agree with my wife about a specific decision, then I do not take that decision. If we are one in the Lord, then we should act like that.
In 1 Corinthians 2:16 we read that (ESV)
For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
I heard one of Derek Prince’s commentaries about this verse. And he was stating that this verse is about WE (plural) not about ME (singular). It is not that I have the mind of Christ just by myself, but only together with other believers. God will give me a small part of His plan. To another brother of mine a different part of His plan. And together we need to arrange all the pieces of the puzzle and find the mind of Christ in a particular area for life or ministry. Because God’s vision for your life is bigger than yourself!
Now what?
God is the same yesterday, today and forever. And that means, among other things, that God is still guiding His people today in many different and creative ways. We all need to pray regularly for a willing and guidable heart that He can use, for His glory! Indeed, we need God to deliver us from stubbornness and pride that will hinder His Spirit to lead us.
And remember that God wants to guide you because He loves you!
