Messiah is the Rock

Messiah is the Rock or the foundation for a believer’s life. Many people ask themselves if they should build their faith life on a denomination, a creed, a church, a ceremony or a tradition. And many are confused about what or who should they believe. In my post, I build on the previous ones to further show that Christ or Messiah is the Rock of our faith in God.

Not every believer agrees with that

I remember talking with a Catholic lady one day and trying to share my faith with her. She was not a nominal Catholic—she really practiced her faith daily. I tried to share the gospel with her and gently tell her how many of the Catholic Church’s practices are not biblical and thus they are false. But it was like I was speaking to a wall—nothing could penetrate her mind.

I realised from my discussions with her she believes the traditions of her denomination more than the Bible. Moreover, she believes the Pope more than Yeshua/Jesus and her priest more than the Apostles.

A few days later, when I was praying for her, the Lord reminded me of the verse in Matthew 17:5 (TLV):

While He was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them; and behold, a voice from out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. Listen to Him!”

This verse is straightforward. If you ask yourself in whom should you trust or who should you obey, then this is the answer—trust in Yeshua/Jesus. You want to build your life on Yeshua—Messiah is the Rock or the only Rock.

In John 8:12 (TLV) we read:

Yeshua spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. The one who follows Me will no longer walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Messiah is the Rock

You cannot miss the mark in life if you follow Yeshua and obey His words. If you put your trust in a denomination or anything else or anyone else, you will end up separated from God for eternity—that is hell. But if you put your trust in Yeshua and accept Him as the Rock of your life, then heaven and His Kingdom are your eternal inheritance.

People will try to make you follow their rules, traditions or religions. A wise man will put his trust only in Yeshua. A wise man will obey the words of God, who told us to listen to Yeshua (Mat 17:5). So, if your Priest or Pastor or denomination or authority teaches you something different from the words of Yeshua, do not obey them—remain faithful to God and save your soul. In 1 Corinthians 3:11 (TLV) we read:

For no one can lay any other foundation than what is already laid—which is Yeshua the Messiah.

Peter confirms this in 1 Peter 2:6 (TLV)

For it says in Scripture “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone, a chosen, precious cornerstone. Whoever trusts in Him will never be put to shame.”

Here Peter refers to the verse in Isaiah 28:16. We can see how both the Old Testament and the New Testament agree that no one else and nothing else is the true foundation for a believer than Yeshua. Messiah is the Rock upon which one should build—the only Rock.

How about Peter?

Let’s read Matthew 16:13-18 (TLV)

When Yeshua came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They answered, “Some say John the Immerser, others say Elijah, and still others say Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” He said, “But who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Yeshua said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven! And I also tell you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My community; and the gates of Sheol will not overpower it.

In the original Greek of the New Testament, there is a play upon words in verse 18. In Greek, the name “Peter” is Petros and the word for “rock” is petra. So, in other words, Yeshua said:

You are Peter [Petros], and upon this rock [petra] I will build my community [Church].

Petros means a small stone and petra means a large stone. No serious believer can think Yeshua would imply He will build His Church upon a pebble.

I needed to mention this passage, as many people think the Apostle Peter is the rock upon which Messiah builds His Church. The English translations can be confusing without knowledge of the original words. Peter is not the foundation of the Church—Messiah is the Rock upon which the Church and believers need to build! Yeshua is the genuine foundation of the Church.

Other scriptures showing that Messiah is the Rock

Psalm 18:2 (TLV) says:

Adonai is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in Him I take refuge, my shield, my horn of salvation, my stronghold.

Read Psalm 62 for more insights. The Apostle Peter himself declares in Acts 4:12 (TLV) the same very truth in different words

There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved!”

In both Psalm 18 and 62 the word rock appears connected with the word salvation. And Peter gives us the accurate interpretation of how should we understand these two—Messiah is the Rock of our salvation.

Now what?

There are too many people believing in Church or the Pope or their Rabbi for the salvation of their soul and eternity. But the only One who can save is Yeshua. Messiah is the Rock upon we can build our life. We can confidently build upon His life, death, burial, and resurrection. Yeshua is the only One who lived a sinless life died on the cross on our behalf and was raised from the death as the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep (1 Cor 15:20).

I want to encourage you to renounce your confusion and follow Yeshua. If you don’t know what to do or what way you should go—ask the Holy Spirit to show you what Yeshua and His Apostles are teaching in the Bible. And only follow His Word—you will not be lost, but you will save your soul.
