Reasons, why people do not adore God alone, are many. Romania is a Christian Orthodox country. And one of the customs in the Christian Orthodox Church is the worship of other people and so-called ‘saints.’ Therefore, in this respect, they have a similar approach to the Catholic Church. And my intention is not to criticise Catholicism or other religions. Even though I believe they are false religions.
In 2014 when I did visit India for the first time, something bizarre did happen to me. Long story short, I become friend with one of my friend’s neighbors. He was a Hindu man in his sixties. And one day he did invite me to visit his house and have dinner with him and his wife. I was glad to accept his invitation.
However, when I did arrive at his apartment, he did something I was not expecting. Immediately after he opened the door, he did bend his body before me. And then his wife did the same thing. I was shocked. Moreover, for the next few seconds I did not know what was happening and how should I react. However, in my spirit, I felt something was not right.
Therefore, I did ask them what are they doing. My friends smiled and told me that they want to show me respect and worship me. I could not believe what I was hearing! Moreover, they did tell me they worshipped ‘the god’ in me and not me, as this is the custom in their culture.
I told them something like thank you for honoring me, but according to my religion and culture, this is wrong. I said I do not want to offend you, but I am not God. They did apologize, and then it was one of those awkward moments no one likes. However, I was able to use that incident and start a discussion about God and Jesus.
That incident remained in my mind very vividly. And I did observe that people in India are searching for God. However, they are doing this in the wrong places and in the wrong way. They are worshiping everything— trees, plants, birds, animals, objects, themselves, other people (some people are long dead, and some are alive) and gods or idols.
Do you know what the exciting part is? We in Europe are not that different than they are. In many ‘Christian’ denominations people are worshiping other people (like the ‘virgin Mary’), objects (like they worship the cross of Jesus instead of Jesus or the ‘holy Graal’ etc.) and rituals. Many Christians have lots of reasons for which they adore other gods besides or before Jesus.
In my previous post I did speak about the importance of worshiping Jesus and how can one do that. And in this post, I want to share with you two reasons and lies why I believe people are not adoring God.
Reason #1: People do not adore God because they lack proper language.
This is one of the biggest lies in the life of a believer. The enemy will come and tell you that you cannot adore God because you do not have the vocabulary to do that. And I know many people are caught by this lie. Moreover, they will not pray to God, praise God, worship and adore God because they are lead by this false humility.
And somehow they believe is better not to pray to God and adore Him than to make a mistake. Therefore, I want to encourage you to renounce this lie, today. And let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence (Hebrews 4:16, NIV) just as we are, through Jesus and His sacrifice and by the help of the Holy Spirit. Let us approach God with confidence, but not with arrogance.
Moreover, you can always ask the Holy Spirit to teach how to pray and how to adore Jesus. And He will do that.
Remember that we do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans (Romans 8:26, NIV).
The Psalms are great to use when you do not know how to pray, or you feel you lack words. Like Psalm 45 or 63. The Psalms were written with simple words, but they carry a strong message.
Reason #2: People do not adore God out of ignorance.
However, I believe the language is not the biggest problem, but our knowledge of God. How can one adore Someone he or she does not know? Therefore, our worship will suffer because we do not know enough the God we worship.
As A. W. Tozer well said we need a high view of God. Too often we try to worship a small god. And a small god is not God, but it is an idol or a false god. And the Word of God makes it clear that we are not to worship any other God before Him (or, as other translations are saying— besides Him).
Therefore, let us pray for the Spirit of the knowledge of the Lord to be poured out on us. And let us adore Jesus, as this is our duty and privilege. Furthermore, let find more reasons for which to adore Jesus!
The God we adore is the God we value more and the God who is magnified in our lives. The God we adore is the God we love, worship, obey and follow. And the God we adore is the God with whom we will spend eternity. Furthermore, there are no genuine reasons why we should not adore Jesus.
Let us renounce any excuse and barrier that hinders our adoration towards Jesus. And let us humble ourselves before Him, repent of any lie and ask for a higher measure of His Spirit to be poured out over our lives. And let us not forget that only by nurturing a genuine relationship with Jesus we can become all that He created us to be.
My aim each day is to adore God more than anything else
A. W. Tozer
