Building a strong foundation for your life is the most important thing you can do as a believer. However, what does it mean to build a foundation? In my post, I will not show you a six-step plan on how to build your self-esteem. But we will look at the words of Yeshua.
An excellent example
Last summer my wife and I decided we needed a vacation. Therefore, we went somewhere in the mountains where Romania has a beautiful National Park.
On our last day in the Park as we were driving around without a destination on our GPS we saw a sign on the road indicating the ruins of a medieval castele. So, we decided instantly that we want to visit the castle.
We drove for fifteen minutes towards the old castle until we could not go further by car. We stepped out of the car, put our hiking shoes on and went up the hill.
I am slower than my wife—she is tough. Finally, we reached the top of the hill only to realize we climbed the wrong hill as the old Castle ruins were on the opposite hill. We took a break for me to breathe properly and rest our legs after the hike before continuing our journey.
However, from the hill we were on we had an excellent view of the Castle. I saw many old Castle ruins in my life—Romania has plenty of them. This one was nothing special to me. What hit me was something else.
As I looked at it I realized that the Castle is hundreds of years old—the walls were crumbling, it had no roof; it looked desolated. But the foundation of the castle looked liked it was build yesterday! Building a strong foundation to the castle was the one thing that preserved the castle from vanishing in the clouds of history.
Building a strong foundation is your responsibility
Immediately after seeing the castle’s foundation, my thoughts went to the words of Yeshua in Matthew 7:24-27. Let us read them together:
Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house; and yet it did not fall, for its foundation had been built on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall. (TLV)
Yeshua encourages all of His disciples to build a strong foundation for themselves. If you consider yourself a disciple of Yeshua, you need to ask yourself if you have done that. And I want to be crystal clear from the beginning: building a strong foundation for your life is your responsibility. It’s not your Pastor’s responsibility, or the leaders of your Church’s, or your husband or wife, or your friends—it is yours! You are responsible for your foundation—not for the foundation of someone else but yours.
Take responsibility for your life
I know some of you think building a strong foundation for your life is God’s responsibility, and if you don’t have a strong foundation, you blame God for this. So, I want to start from the premise that God wants all of His children to have a strong, solid foundation. I think this is common sense, and it’s obvious in the above text from Matthew 7.
I don’t believe God will build a strong foundation in your life while you watch endless TV shows, go to Church at Christmas and Passover, and pray before your meal. Indeed, God will give you all the help you need, Yeshua will give you His grace that is sufficient (2 Cor 12:9) and the Holy Spirit is there to help you. However, you and I need to work together with God in building a strong foundation for our lives. You and I will have to seek continually God’s face, draw closer to Him, pray, open our Bible, fellowship with the Church, etc. By the way, you know that God will not open the Bible in your place? He already knows what is written in the Bible because He is the Author the Bible. But you and I need to open it every day and work at building a strong foundation.
God does not need a foundation because He is self-sufficient in Himself—He is God. Needless to say, we all need to work at building a strong foundation for ourselves.
What happens if you do not start building a strong foundation
Yeshua made it clear in Matthew 7:24—the house fell. A simple but powerful statement. The believers without a strong foundation for their life are those who are always confused about God and faith in general. They keep on looking to men for guidance and do not go first to God and His Word. Moreover, there are those who walked with God for a while and were full with passion and zeal and now are living as if there is no God and denying His power. I am not judging them—I say with great sadness.
If you do not have a strong foundation, the so many false teachings and doctrines will deceive you. You will start to idolize certain people (even Pastors or Bible teachers, or missionaries) and stop questioning their sinful life and lack of integrity. Without a strong foundation you keep on falling in the same sins and temptations and cannot see the cracks in your foundation. You might have a theology degree, serve the Lord from a young age, speak in tongues and still have a weak foundation. Someone without a strong foundation is attracted to liberal theology, and they don’t believe divorce is something against God’s will. Moreover, many of those who lack a foundation are overcome with different addictions and depression is the normal way of life.
Maybe you received prayer ministry from some most anointed people on the face of the earth. And maybe you even began stepping out of your comfort zone and joined a house group. Nevertheless, when the smallest problem comes your way your life/house falls down—because you have built on sand. I am not saying someone who is here is not a Christian/a believer—but the Bible uses the word immaturity to describe such a believer.
Now what?
You will have much joy if you know that you need to take responsibility in building a strong foundation for yourself. If not, you will keep on blaming God and the people around you for your spiritual growth. Please, pray and read Matthew 7 once again, for yourself. And ask the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart. Indeed, until you are fully convinced that you need to build a strong foundation you will not seek God’s face and help to start working.
