Building a strong foundation for your life is hard work. If in my previous post I encouraged you to take responsibility for your life now I want to encourage you to persevere in building a strong foundation.
An interesting Christianity
I know people (believers) who, in the last couple of years, attended dozens of Christian conferences, inner healing schools, prophecy workshops, and many other Christian meetings where they learned (most of the time I would say) good things. And they come from these meetings and feeling good about themselves and believe they are doing fine in their relationship with God. Indeed, for a while they are doing fine—usually, for a short while. However, two or three days later, they return to the same addictions, to the same well-known depression and go through the same valleys.
Do you know why? They build on sand—they have no foundation to their life. It’s like nothing can stick with them for a long time. The results are only short term—you can see no real long-term changes or transformations. They accumulated information, but not transformation.
Indeed, they are like a person who bought a piece of land to build a house. And over the years they deposit on their land many types of construction materials. They brought materials from different Churches, conferences, biblical or prophetic workshops, from different books, blogs, sermons, radio or TV shows, or maybe even from different Bible Schools. And they keep on bringing different things from different parts. However, they did not start building a house on their piece of land. They continue to bring new things from everywhere and pile them with the thought one day they will build a beautiful house. So, they take one door from a conference, a window from a blog post, and so on. Needless to say, they never began building a strong foundation for their house—nothing.
There are several things you need to know if you want a solid foundation for your life:
1. Building a strong foundation will require hard work
To build the foundation of a house is hard work. I know that because my parents (together with me and my brothers) built a house. God helped my parents to build a house with great sacrifices and efforts. I can remember the moment we laid down the foundation of the house—it was a memorable day. We could not afford to hire a company to do the work for us so we had to do it. Needless to say, we realized that if we don’t work, nobody will work in our place. Moreover, my parent’s house is big. And for a big house you need a deep foundation. Everybody knows that you need to dig low if you want to build high.
Yeshua speaks in Matthew 7:24-27 about two builders who both built a house. We cannot read that they hired a company to do the work for them. The house Yeshua speaks of in Matthew 7 refers to your life as a Christian (and mine). The word house refers to yourself, to your family, to your calling and ministry. And Yeshua tells us we need to build that house—on the rock. Yeshua is the Rock!
It’s your responsibility
You cannot delegate the responsibility you have for your “house” to someone else. You need to do it for yourself and I need to do it for myself. If you want to be spiritually strong, you need a deep foundation! There are too many believers and spiritual leaders without a strong foundation. They say they have a foundation, but they don’t. You see no discipline in their life, no order, no vision, no balance. Their family is dysfunctional, they lack integrity and usually have big financial debts. And they blame the government, their children, Pastor, the Church or anyone else but themselves for the chaos in their life.
Be different and start building a strong foundation for your life. In the Kingdom of God there is order and balance but chaos is not part of God’s Kingdom.
2. Offer yourself time
Building a strong foundation will require much time. Yeshua told us that the wise man lay the foundation of his house on the rock. It is one thing to dig a foundation on soil and another thing to dig through the rock. And it is much easier to build on sand, right? If you build your house on sand, you need no foundation—you skip the foundation part and jump straight to the building part, as many (or most of) believers do. From the outside they seem to have a beautiful house. And you wonder how come he or she built their house so fast? How did they put the roof on and paint the walls so quickly? Only to find out a little later that they had no foundation. Sound familiar?
To build on the rock, it takes much time. Especially if you want to build something beautiful and lasting. And I hope all of us desire this—to build a life on the Rock, on Christ (1 Cor 10:4). A life on Christ is a life you build for the rest of your life!
My advice to you: in building a strong foundation for your life, ask for God’s grace—offer yourself time. I know how hard it it’s to lay a foundation but we cannot skip this stage and we cannot quicken the process. It will take as long as it will take.
Maturity takes time
Many believers want to mature but do not want to pay the price of growing. Christians in our days have strange ideas about what a mature believer is like and how to get there. Let me share with you a secret: the first price you need to pay if you want to grow into a mature believer is your time. A personal relationship with God requires time. To have a strong foundation requires time.
As a disciple of Yeshua you need to know this: the more time you invest, the deeper you go in your foundation. There is no other option. You know that the area of your life where you invest most of the time will become the strongest? You will become best in the area you invest the most time. Think of an athlete who spends time in training.
Indeed, in building a strong foundation for your life you will have to spend time with God, in His Presence, in His Word and in worship.
The “instant foundation” myth
I know we live in the age when people do not have time. You can be busy and not have time for many things but make sure you are never too busy to have time for God and nurture your relationship with Him and keep yourself warm (Revelation 3:15). If you are at a stage where you do not have time for the Bible and prayer, change your life before it’s too late. Friend, if you are that busy then something is wrong with you. You and I need to work daily at building a strong foundation. Do you know why? Yeshua tells us that storms will come our way and if our foundation is not on the rock, then our life will fall and fail. Storms come anyway—let us be ready in the only way we can be ready, and that is by having a solid foundation.
3. For Building a strong foundation you will need proper tools
You will need some special tools if you want to build your house on the rock. When you dig on the rock, you will need a pick-hammer, a chisel, a sledge-hammer and many other similar tools. You know, all the tools a builder needs to break the rock.
Likewise, building a strong foundation in your faith requires special tools too. You need the tools of prayer and the Word of God. As we read in Jeremiah 23:29 (TLV)
“Is not My word like fire?” says Adonai, “or like a hammer that shatters rock?
We build a strong foundation only on the Word of God, not on books, blogs, or sermons. Don’t get me wrong—the books, blogs and the sermons you hear (I hope) provide good aid but cannot replace a genuine relationship with God through His Word.
Ask for the help of the Holy Spirit and use all the tools you find in the Scriptures.
4. In building a strong foundation you need to be intentional
Your foundation will not build by itself. Anyone who has a strong foundation did not get there by accident. There is no coincidence they built a solid foundation.
If you want to have a strong foundation, you need a plan and a strategy. And you have to work on it daily. I know it’s difficult—there are battles to fight, a cross to carry, a race to run. But it is worth it to be a believer.
Therefore, daily you need to cultivate your relationship with God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, through prayer and God’s Word.
5. Nobody is an exception
Friend, listen carefully to my words: there is not a way for me to build a strong foundation for my life and a different way for you. Nobody is an exception from the principles laid out in the Word of God—I don’t care in what country you live, how much money you have or what denomination you are. We are all special but none of us that special to the degree to believe the Bible does not apply to him/her.
I say this just in case there is someone who thinks: yes; you are right. Usually and for most of the Christians it takes time to dig a foundation, and it’s hard and you need to fight. But God spoke to me; I am different and special and that all the principles you mentioned are not for me.
I hope nobody thinks like that. However, just in case there is one (there is always one) who believes that, I have a message for you: these thoughts are not from God! These thoughts are against the Word of God and you are not an exception to the rule—do not be deceived. Our Churches are full with people thinking they are so special and holy they need no foundation because God spoke a word on their behalf and out of nothing and in a second He created a strong solid foundation for themselves and now all they have to do is rest—and by rest, they mean do nothing.
In a word, my prayer for you is that you will not be deceived and will not postpone the building of your foundation.
Now what?
Recently I had a conversation with my wife—I can’t remember how it began. But I told my wife that the greatest change in my life happened when God prompted me study theology at the King’s University. And I know for many people going to a Seminary was like going to a cemetery. But not for me. To go deeper in the Word of God changed my inner faith and life forever. I learned so much and just studying the doctrines of the Bible kindled a fire down in my soul.
On the other hand, I know God began working in my life long before I joined a Seminary. I know He began shaping my life through my daily devotional times with Him, through fasting and prayer, worship and pure obedience. Every act we do in step with the Spirit of God will take us further and will deepen our foundation and strengthen our life in Him.
I pray that you will start building a strong foundation for your life.
