Open doors to the enemy: in this post I want to talk about some ways Satan is using to drag people into the pornography bondage or any type of bondage.
My purpose is not to talk about all the ways in which one can fall into the pornography bondage. My purpose is just to point out some possible open doors through which we allowed the enemy to sneak into our lives.
People perish for lack of knowledge
God in Hosea 4:6a (TLV) is telling us
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge
God’s people are not destroyed because they lack anointing, but because they lack knowledge. God’s people are not destroyed because God does not love them. Or because the Lord does not care about them or because God does not have the strength to protect them.
They might have certain knowledge, but in the context it means they lack knowledge of God (Hosea 4:1). And knowledge of God’s Word. Again, they might know a little about God or about God’s Word, but not enough. Indeed, there is a connection between knowing God and knowing His Word.
For one reason or the other, you may struggle with pornography or a different addiction. Or you did struggle in the past or know someone who does. Maybe you do not even know anymore how you ended up in this sinful behavior. However, it is important to know how you first came in touch with pornography or any other sinful behavior because you need to know what to do next and how to get out.
Open doors to the enemy
If a believer is interested in how God thinks about a certain topic, he needs to search the Scriptures and see what the Bible says about it. And he or she needs to look in the Scriptures at Jesus, the living Word of God, and see how He thinks about that topic.
For example, if you want to know what God thinks about money, just look at the life and teachings of Jesus about money. And if you want to know what God thinks about sexual immorality, one needs to look at the life and teachings of Jesus to find the answer. The Word of God has an answer for every situation we are facing. Just ask the Holy Spirit to guide you through the Scriptures and open up your eyes. And then ask Him to help you apply that truth and obey it.
So, it is important to know what the Bible says about sin. And how a believer can open a door for Satan to send one of his agents to oppress us.
Just to make sure I am not misunderstood: I do not believe demons can possess a born-again Christian. I agree with Daniel Akin in his commentary from Mark 1:21-28 (Exalting Jesus in Mark: Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary), that
demons can oppress but not possess believers.
The Scriptures declare we can open doors to the enemy
I know I did open doors for the enemy to come into my life, after I had watched that dirty film in the Internet café and after that, through my habitual sin. Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 4:26-27 (TLV)
Be angry, yet do not sin.” Do not let the sun go down on your anger, nor give the devil a foothold.
These verses suggest that sin can give a place (topos, in Greek) or a foothold in the life of a believer. Matthew Henry said about this passage
those who persevere in sinful anger and in wrath let the devil into their hearts, and suffer him to gain upon them, till he bring them to malice, mischievous machinations, etc.
Here Paul is writing to believers. As a general principle, sin—of any kind, not just anger—will open a door for the enemy to come in and oppress us, if there is no genuine repentance (also read Acts 5:3).
Adam and Eve did the same thing; they opened a door for the enemy to come in. It was the same case in my life, as I did not repent, but I indulged the sinful thoughts that resulted in more sinful compromises. And always, one small compromise will call for another compromise, a bigger one. And always, living by the flesh will give the devil a foothold in our lives, an opportunity to influence our lives. Through our sin, we open doors to the enemy.
Open doors to the enemy through abuse
I have encountered individuals who suffered from sexual abuse by others, and that became the gateway for the enemy to infiltrate their lives. After experiencing that abuse, they felt defiled and overwhelmed with shame and guilt. Anyone who’s been in a situation like that knows how difficult it is to be restored, especially if there is no one around whom you can trust. Many of these people, if not helped, will fall into more error and sexual immorality. And some of them will even turn into abusers.
Others have been exposed to pornography (or sexual content) by their parents or other family members. Because they did lack the wisdom and power to close the open doors to the enemy, they ended up in bondage.
Whenever we open doors for the enemy to come in, he will come. And he will steal something, will kill something and destroy in our life (John 10:10). Because that’s what he does, that’s his ministry.
Watch over your life
Satan will always study us and will look for ways to come into our lives and oppress us and drag us back into his kingdom. Through our sin, Satan has the right to come in, and he has the legal ground to claim a place in our lives. However, the ministry of Jesus is to set us free. But in Christianity there is no forgiveness and freedom without repentance. Only through confession of sin, repentance and forgiveness one can close the door that is open to the enemy.
In John 8:34 Jesus is saying (TLV)
Yeshua answered them, “Amen, amen I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
Many Bible scholars point that here Jesus talks about habitual sin. Jesus continues to say in John 8:35-36 (TLV)
Now the slave does not remain in the household forever; the son abides forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!
Jesus tells us we have a choice to either live in sin or to be set free by Him alone. A genuine believer knows that his/her life is a life of fighting the good fight of faith against sin, the devil and the world.
Make godly choices
Just as one will learn to commit sin, one can also learn how to make godly choices. First, we need to unlearn the bad habits and then learn how to replace them with good and righteous habits. We need to replace the lies we believed and change our minds with the help of the Holy Spirit. And that is a process we will need the help of other believers, too.
I am not trying to find excuses for sin, as there is no excuse before God. Sin needs to be viewed with responsibility and with a radical approach. On the other hand, the sinner needs to be viewed in the light of God’s holy compassionate love and truth. And I know we should treat every person uniquely, as every person has a unique background and story. Nevertheless, the scriptural principles will apply to every believer, and no one is an exception.
