Open doors to the enemy: in this post I want to talk about some ways Satan is using to drag people into the pornography bondage or any type of bondage. Perhaps you will recognize some in your life. However, it is possible for you to experience a mix of them.
My purpose is not to talk about all the ways in which one can fall into the pornography bondage. My purpose is just to point out some possible open doors through which we did allow the enemy to sneak into our lives.
People perish for lack of knowledge
God in Hosea 4:6a (TLV) is telling us
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge
God’s people are not destroyed because they lack anointing, but because they lack knowledge. God’s people are not destroyed because God does not love them. Or care about them or because God does not have strength to protect them. They might have certain knowledge, but in the context it means they lack knowledge of God (Hosea 4:1). And knowledge of God’s Word. Again, they might know a little of God or about God, but not enough. Moreover, there is a connection between knowing God and knowing His Word.
For one reason or the other, you may struggle with pornography or a different addiction. Or you did struggle in the past or know someone who does. Maybe you do not even know anymore how you did end up into this sinful behavior. However, it is important to know how you first came in touch with pornography or any other sinful behavior because you need to know what to do next and how to get out.
Open doors to the enemy
If a believer is interested in how God thinks about a certain topic, he needs to search the Scriptures and see what the Bible says about it. And he or she needs to look in the Scriptures at Jesus, the living Word of God, and see how He thinks about that topic.
For example, if you want to know what God thinks about money, just look at the life and teachings of Yeshua about money. And if you want to know what God thinks about sexual immorality, one needs to look at the life and teachings of Yeshua and find the answer. The Word of God has an answer for every situation we are facing. Just ask the Holy Spirit to guide you through the Scriptures and open up your eyes. And then ask Him to help you apply that truth and obey it.
So, it is important to know what the Bible is saying about sin. And how a believer can open a door for Satan to send one of his agents to torment us. Because if we do not know, we are in danger of being destroyed.
Sin will open a door in the life of a believer for Satan’s agents to torment him. But how is this possible?
The Scriptures declare we can open doors to the enemy
I know I did open doors for the enemy to come into my life, after I had watched that dirty film in the Internet Café and after that, through my habitual sin. Apostle Paul is telling us in Ephesians 4:26-27 (TLV)
Be angry, yet do not sin.” Do not let the sun go down on your anger, nor give the devil a foothold.
These verses do suggest that sin can give a place (topos, in Greek) or a foothold in the life of a believer. Matthew Henry said about this passage
those who persevere in sinful anger and in wrath let the devil into their hearts, and suffer him to gain upon them, till he bring them to malice, mischievous machinations, etc.
Here Paul is writing to believers. As a general principle, sin—of any kind, not just anger—will open a door for the enemy to come in, if there is no genuine repentance (also read Acts 5:3).
Adam and Eve did the same thing; they opened a door for the enemy to come in. It was the same case in my life, as I did not repent, but I did indulge the sinful thoughts that resulted into more sinful compromises. And always, one small compromise will call for another compromise, a bigger one. And always, living by the flesh will give the devil a foothold in our lives, an opportunity to influence our lives. Through our sin, we open doors to the enemy.
Open doors to the enemy through abuse
I have met people who were sexually abused by others, and that was the open door through which the enemy came into their lives. After that abuse, they were defiled and overwhelmed with shame and guilt. I am talking about real people with real stories. Anyone who’s been in a situation like that knows how difficult it is to be restored, especially if there is no one around whom you can trust. Moreover, many of these people if not helped immediately will fall into more error and sexual immorality. And some of them will even turn into abusers.
Others have been exposed to pornography (or sexual content) by their parents or other family members. Because they did lack the wisdom and power to close the open doors to the enemy, they did end up in bondage.
Indeed, many believers can become heavily influenced by Satan’s agents or spirits (in the Bible are mentioned with demons or devils) if they continue in a sinful habit. I know this is a hot topic. I do not believe a Christian can be possessed by the devil. However, I do believe a Christian can be influenced by evil spirits (or demons, we are talking about the same thing) of fear, anger, jealousy, sexual immorality, etc.
Whenever we open doors for the enemy to come in, he will come. And he will steal something, will kill something and destroy (John 10:10). Because that’s what he does, that’s his ministry.
Often deliverance is needed
Satan will always study us and will look for ways to come into our lives. Through our sin Satan has the right to come in, and he has the legal ground to claim a place in our lives. However, the ministry of Yeshua is to set us free. But in Christianity there is no forgiveness and freedom without repentance. Only through confession of sin, repentance and forgiveness one can close the door that is open to the enemy. After we remove the legal rights of the enemy in our lives he and his agents will have to go out in the Name of Yeshua.
A habitual sin in the life of a believer can also indicate that there is the presence of an evil spirit operating. If a believer just cannot overcome sin, maybe it is because a demonic influence is present. I know I needed deliverance. Until I did receive prayer ministry for deliverance, I was not able to walk in victory.
In John 8:34 Yeshua is saying (TLV)
Yeshua answered them, “Amen, amen I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
Many Bible scholars point that here Yeshua talks about habitual sin. Yeshua continues to say in John 8:35-36 (TLV)
Now the slave does not remain in the household forever; the son abides forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!
Can a believer be influenced by a demon?
Yeshua is telling us that we have a choice to either live in sin or to be set free by Him alone. Even after reading all the scriptures, one still may not be convinced that a believer can be influenced by an evil spirit. How can God, who is holy, live in the same place with an evil-unclean spirit?
God is omnipresent (Jeremiah 23:24, Psalm 139:7, etc). And we know from the Bible that demons are real and present on earth today (Revelation 12:9, Mark 16:17, etc). That means demons can exist within God’s world, and demons can also exist within the body of a person. However, how can a believer be influenced by an evil spirit(s)?
In 2 Corinthians 12:7 (TLV) we read what Apostle Paul is saying
even in the extraordinary quality of the revelations. So that I would not exalt myself, a thorn in the flesh was given to me—a messenger of satan to torment me, so I would not exalt myself
The word in Greek for messenger is aggelos and it can be translated as messenger or angel. Therefore, we can see that apostle Paul was given a messenger (angel or demon) of Satan to afflict his physical body. We see here a believer who had a messenger of Satan is his body. The reason for his messenger was not to take pride or to exalt himself or others to exalt in him. According to my research, nobody really knows what that thorn in the flesh is. However, the point is that it’s possible for a believer to have an evil spirit in his body.
More open doors to the enemy
I encourage every reader to keep a healthy balance and not freak out. Do not look for demons. Just look to Yeshua and only if He is pointing out and revealing something like that in your life then take action.
I did hear about a young man (let’s call him Daniel) looking for freedom from the pornography bondage. He told his prayer ministry partners how he did find a pornographic magazine in his father’s bedroom. That’s how his involvement with pornography started. The interesting part of the story is when Daniel did share with his prayer ministry partners about the day when he confronted his father. His father told him that he was introduced to pornography when he found a nude magazine in his father’s bedroom. So one can see how this sin continued over three generations in this family.
Of course, Daniel was still responsible for his personal sin. One can inherit some spiritual weaknesses coming down to him from the past generations. God said in Exodus 20:5-6 (ESV)
You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
See also Exodus 34:6-7. Here God describes Himself, how He is. He does not change, and I believe this applies for believers today.
We can inherit a weakness
If one goes to the doctor and the doctor finds out that he or she has diabetics, one of the first things they will ask will be is anyone else in your family with this disease? Because they know that if there is a weakness like this in your family genes then you are more vulnerable to diabetics than other people. I believe this is also true when we talk about generational inequity.
If a man (or a woman) struggles with a sin and cannot overcome it, maybe it is because he did inherit a spiritual weakness coming down from the generational lines. However, there is power in the Name of Yeshua and in His sacrifice on the cross to break every chain, generational or not. But for now, keep in mind that this can be another open door in the life of a believer.
Make godly choices
Just as one will learn to commit sin, one can also learn how to make godly choices. First, we need to unlearn the bad habits and then learn how to replace them with good and righteous habits. We need to replace the lies we believed and change our minds with the help of the Holy Spirit. And that is a process we will need the help of other believers, too.
I am not trying to find excuses for sin, as there is no excuse before God. Sin needs to be viewed with responsibility and with a radical approach. On the other hand, the sinner needs to be viewed in the light of God’s holy compassionate love and truth. And I know every person should be treated uniquely as every person has a unique background and story. Nevertheless, the scriptural principles will apply to every believer and no one is an exception.
