Ever since I became a believer, I practice fellowship with God on a regular basis. And with small failures, I could say that almost every day I go into the Presence of God and learn to abide in Him. Psalm 27:8 (TLV) speaks very well of what’s happening to my heart:
To You my heart says: “Seek My face.” Your face, Adonai, I seek.
However, I am sure that many of you experience a similar thing. And I hope nobody is interpreting what I said above as bragging.
What are some important things to pray for every day as a Christian? Our prayers often focus on immediate needs, problems, family, work, health, and decisions. Those things matter to God, but Scripture also teaches us to pray about what is happening inside our hearts.
Over the years, I have learned that some of my most important prayers are not about asking God to change my circumstances. They are about asking Him to change me—to keep my eyes on Jesus, deepen my fellowship with Him, guard my heart, teach me to depend on Him, and remove anything that competes with Him.
During one of my quiet times with God, these five prayer priorities became especially clear to me. They have since become things to pray for every day as I seek to walk closely with Christ.
Here are five prayers you can consider making part of your daily prayer life.
1. Pray Every Day to Keep Your Eyes on Jesus
In Hebrews 12:2 (ESV) we read
looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
We will go where we look. And if you are like me— and I believe you are— you want to follow Jesus! If you’re going to follow Him, then you need to look at Him. However, we are all in danger to look at people, at problems or the attacks of the enemy instead of looking to Jesus.
The Psalmist describes this danger in Psalm 121:1-2 (ESV)
I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
I traveled not long ago with my wife and some friends into the mountains, in Romania. The mountains are very high. However, as we approached them, we were able to see the top of the mountains. Mountains, no matter how high they are, have an end. Moreover, above them, you can see the sky and know that God is much higher. The mountains have an end but the Lord is infinite.
God speaks to me constantly to look at Him. My prayer is for God to heal my eyes and help me or make me look always to Him not to myself or other people or obstacles. Needless to say, but this is the only way to enter our calling and remain in His will.
2. Pray for a Deeper Fellowship With God
And by this I mean real fellowship with God. I have met many men of God over the years. And when I had fellowship with them— even for 10 minutes— I was always a different man. However, often I sat in the Presence of God and I knew I was not having real fellowship with the Lord. I did have fellowship with myself or my mind wandered God knows where.
The Lord spoke to me to fight for a genuine time of fellowship with Him. Often, just because I have a hectic program, I intentionally stop and seek His Face and Presence. Therefore, make sure you fight to keep your focus on God, no matter what you do or where you are.
3. Pray for God to Guard Your Heart
I did understand in my time of fellowship that I need to watch over my heart. To practice God’s Presence is the most precious thing in my life.
However, as you already know, sin has a way to hinder our fellowship with God. And whenever this happens, we need to run back to the Lord in repentance and restore our fellowship with Him. God wants to fellowship with His children continually!
Often, that implies to ask for forgiveness from your spouse. Or to forgive someone else. And maybe to repent of a wrong attitude towards your leaders in your congregation. Whenever you sense your relationship with the Lord is somehow broken, ask for wisdom and revelation why is that so. Of course, often we do not have to ask the Lord because we already know the answer. As you know, whenever we live in sin, we cannot enjoy the full joy of being in fellowship with Jesus.
4. Pray for Grace to Depend on God Alone
I sensed God telling me that if I want to see a breakthrough in my life, I need to rely on Him alone. As someone says ‘God, remove from my life anything I rely on besides You’. Often I realise how easily I rely on my strength or on certain strategies or people. However, I began praying for grace to always rely on God alone— my Rock.
Needless to say that this is often challenging and stretching my faith to the limits.
5. Pray for God to Reveal and Remove Idols
God never blesses idols or idolatry. Therefore, if you have a barren or sterile area in your life, it can be so because of an idol. Idols do not attract the Spirit of God but they hinder Him. And wherever the Spirit of God is present, He brings life (see Genesis chapter 1 & 2).
How to Make These Prayers Part of Your Daily Life
You do not need to pray these five prayers mechanically or turn them into another religious checklist. Instead, use them as biblical directions for your conversation with God.
You might take one prayer each morning, connect it with a passage of Scripture, and talk honestly with God about that area of your life. On another day, you may find that one of these prayers becomes especially important.
The goal is not simply to say more prayers. The goal is deeper fellowship with God and a heart increasingly surrendered to Jesus.
These things to pray for every day remind us that prayer is about much more than asking God to solve our problems. Prayer forms our hearts as we walk with Him.
Ask God to keep your eyes on Jesus. Ask Him to deepen your fellowship with Him, guard your heart, teach you to depend on Him alone, and expose anything that competes for His place in your life.
Which of these five prayers do you need most today? Take a few minutes now and talk with God about it.
