The Land and the Promise

The Land and the Promise by Onisim Moisa — English book cover

The Land and the Promise: Israel and the Faithfulness of God

By Onisim Moisa

In The Land and the Promise, I explore what God’s promise to Abraham means for Christians today. How should we understand Israel’s place in the biblical story while keeping Jesus at the center?

To answer these questions, I follow the unfolding story of Scripture, from Genesis and the prophets to Jesus and Paul’s letters. Along the way, I explain why I believe the land retains covenant significance for the Jewish people. At the same time, I consider how this conviction should shape Christian humility, compassion, and faithfulness.

What Is The Land and the Promise About?

God’s promises reveal His character. However, understanding those promises requires careful attention to their recipients, their context, and their fulfillment in Christ.

First, I examine how God included the land within His covenant with Abraham and confirmed that promise through Isaac and Jacob. Yet the gift never removed Israel’s responsibility to obey the Giver. Instead, Scripture holds together promise, judgment, restoration, and the need for a renewed heart.

Next, I consider how Jesus brings blessing to the nations and how Gentile believers become full members of God’s family through faith in Him. Alongside this discussion, I engage Christian interpretations that reach different conclusions about the land.

Ultimately, my aim is to help you examine the biblical passages, understand the argument, and respond with thoughtful faith.

What You Will Explore

  • First, the land within the covenant: discover what Genesis promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
  • Next, the responsibilities of the gift: examine why divine generosity never excuses injustice or disobedience.
  • Then, judgment and restoration: follow how the prophets connect the land with repentance, renewal, and God’s faithfulness.
  • Furthermore, Joshua and fulfillment: consider why a fulfilled promise can still have continuing significance.
  • Most importantly, Jesus and the nations: explore how the Messiah brings Abraham’s blessing to people from every nation.
  • In addition, Israel in Romans 11: examine Paul’s warning against Gentile boasting and his teaching about God’s continuing calling.
  • Finally, faithful Christian practice: reflect on how conviction should shape prayer, humility, compassion, and love of neighbor.

Who Is The Land and the Promise For?

I wrote The Land and the Promise for Christians who want to understand Israel, the land, and God’s covenant faithfulness. In particular, it addresses readers who want to examine the biblical passages behind these questions.

For example, this book may help you if you:

  • Have questions about Old Testament promises and their fulfillment in Jesus.
  • Want an accessible introduction to a subject Christians often debate.
  • Teach Scripture or lead a church Bible study.
  • Want to think carefully about Israel while remembering the dignity of your neighbors.

However, you do not need a theological degree or knowledge of Hebrew. Instead, bring an open Bible and a willingness to consider the evidence. As you read, take time to distinguish what a passage states from the conclusions we draw by connecting it with other texts.

Why I Wrote The Land and the Promise

As a pastor, I want to help Christians understand Scripture and live faithfully in response. In addition, my studies in theology and Messianic Jewish Studies have deepened my interest in the Jewish context of the Bible.

I wrote this book because I believe the land promise deserves to be heard within the whole biblical story. However, explaining that conviction also requires honesty about difficult passages and alternative interpretations. Therefore, I engage objections rather than assuming that everyone who disagrees has misunderstood Scripture.

Above all, my concern reaches beyond winning an argument. I want this study to strengthen your confidence in God and deepen your love for people. For this reason, the book connects its theological discussion with prayer, humility, and obedience to Jesus.

Inside the Book

The discussion unfolds across nine chapters. First, I examine the covenant promises in Genesis. Then I follow the themes of responsibility, restoration, and fulfillment before considering their implications for Christian life.

  1. The land within the covenant
  2. The family of the promise
  3. The Giver and the gift
  4. Judgment and restoration
  5. Joshua and the promise
  6. Jesus stands at the center
  7. Abraham and the nations
  8. God has not rejected Israel
  9. Living with this conviction

In addition, the book includes a conclusion, notes, and a bibliography. These resources help you identify the passages and further reading behind the discussion.

Questions About The Land and the Promise

Does this book present an end-times timetable?

No. Instead, I focus on the biblical texts and how they fit together.

For example, I do not build the argument on identifying the establishment of the modern State of Israel in 1948 as the fulfillment of a particular prophecy. Nor do I offer a timetable for Jesus’ return. Rather, I invite readers to consider what Scripture reveals while recognizing the limits of our knowledge.

Does affirming the land promise mean endorsing every government decision?

No. Although I affirm the land’s continuing covenant significance for the Jewish people, I distinguish that conviction from an endorsement of contemporary governments.

Consequently, questions about borders, property, citizenship, and military conduct require their own evidence and moral judgment. Moreover, the book emphasizes the dignity of Jewish and Palestinian people. Therefore, its practical applications call Christians to reject contempt and pursue truth, compassion, and peace.

Does the book teach a separate way of salvation for Jewish people?

No. Both Jewish and Gentile people need the same Savior, Jesus Christ.

Therefore, ancestry, political commitments, and religious affiliation cannot replace repentance and faith in Him. Likewise, recognizing Israel’s covenant calling does not mean that every Jewish person is automatically saved. Throughout the book, I keep the call to personal faith in Jesus clear.

Can I read this book if I hold a different interpretation?

Yes. In fact, I wrote it with serious Christian disagreements in view.

For example, I consider objections concerning Joshua’s fulfillment language, inheritance in Christ, and the hope of the new creation. However, I also explain why I remain persuaded that the land retains particular covenant significance for Israel.

Even where we disagree, we can examine the passages together. In this way, the book encourages careful study and respectful discussion.

Is the book available in another language?

Yes. In addition to the English edition, The Land and the Promise is available in Brazilian Portuguese.
