Romanian Pentecostalism

Romanian Pentecostalism by Onisim Moisa — book cover

Romanian Pentecostalism: Gheorghe Bradin and the Faith That Shaped a Movement

By Onisim Moisa

In Romanian Pentecostalism, I explore the beginnings of a movement shaped by prayer, Scripture, persecution, and perseverance. Through the story of Gheorghe and Persida Bradin, I consider how faith took root in Romanian communities and what this history can teach Christians today.

However, this story extends beyond its best-known leaders. It also includes ordinary believers, families, and congregations whose faith helped carry the movement forward.

Along the way, I bring historical exploration into conversation with biblical reflection. My aim is to help readers understand the past while thinking carefully about faithful leadership, spiritual discernment, and following Christ today.

What Is Romanian Pentecostalism About?

This book explores the emergence and development of Pentecostal faith in Romania, with particular attention to Gheorghe and Persida Bradin.

First, I examine the wider revival networks and connections that helped Pentecostal teaching reach Romanian believers. Letters, personal relationships, and contact with Christians abroad formed part of this developing story.

Next, I follow the movement through its early congregations, opposition, and changing relationships with the state. These experiences raise important questions about courage, church leadership, and the challenges of preserving Christian convictions under pressure.

At the same time, I consider the beliefs and practices that shaped these communities. Prayer, worship, healing testimonies, and expectations about the Holy Spirit belong to the story, alongside disagreements and difficult decisions.

Throughout the book, I seek to approach this history with appreciation and honesty. Remembering the faith of earlier generations should also encourage us to examine our own lives.

What You Will Explore

  • The movement’s beginnings: First, discover the setting in which Pentecostal faith began to spread among Romanian believers.
  • Gheorghe and Persida Bradin: Explore their contribution while also recognizing the wider community around them.
  • Connections across borders: In addition, consider how revival networks, correspondence, and migration helped ideas travel.
  • Prayer and congregational life: Examine the worship, convictions, and shared practices of early believers.
  • Persecution and perseverance: Then, reflect on the pressures Christians faced and the choices those pressures demanded.
  • Leadership and discernment: Consider disagreements, institutional developments, and the responsibilities of Christian leaders.
  • A continuing inheritance: Finally, ask what later generations can learn from this history as they follow Jesus today.

Who Is This Book For?

I wrote this book for readers interested in Romanian church history and the development of Pentecostal Christianity.

It can also serve pastors, ministry leaders, and Christians who want to reflect on faithfulness under pressure. Although the subject is historical, many of its questions remain deeply practical.

For example, how should churches respond to opposition? What does responsible leadership look like when circumstances become difficult? How can believers remain open to the Holy Spirit while exercising biblical discernment?

Readers from other Christian traditions are welcome as well. You do not need to share every Pentecostal conviction to engage thoughtfully with the people and questions presented here.

Why I Wrote Romanian Pentecostalism

As a pastor, I believe church history can help us think more carefully about discipleship.

However, learning from the past requires more than celebrating inspiring moments. It also involves examining tensions, acknowledging limitations, and distinguishing historical evidence from the ways communities remember their beginnings.

For that reason, I wanted to explore both the faith that sustained this movement and the challenges that accompanied its growth.

Above all, my desire is to encourage a faithful response in the present. Earlier generations leave us questions to consider, responsibilities to carry, and examples that deserve careful reflection.

Inside the Book

The book contains eighteen chapters exploring the movement’s beginnings, development, beliefs, and continuing legacy.

In addition, it includes:

  • A historical timeline to help readers follow the main developments.
  • A glossary to clarify important terms.
  • A six-session reading guide for personal reflection or group discussion.
  • A bibliography for readers who want to explore the subject further.

Together, these resources help connect historical reading with thoughtful discussion. The reading guide also offers a practical starting point for a church group or study gathering.

Questions About Romanian Pentecostalism

Is this only a biography of Gheorghe Bradin?

No. Although Gheorghe Bradin is a central figure, the book also considers Persida Bradin, other believers, and the wider development of the movement. As a result, readers encounter a broader account of Romanian Pentecostal life.

Do I need a background in church history?

No specialist background is required. Moreover, the timeline and glossary help readers follow the historical setting and understand unfamiliar terms.

Can I use the book with a church group?

Yes. The six-session reading guide provides a framework for discussion. You can therefore use it for shared reading, reflection, and conversation about the lessons of church history.

Does the book discuss Pentecostal beliefs?

Yes. Alongside the historical narrative, I explore themes such as the Holy Spirit, prayer, healing, and Christian unity. These discussions connect the movement’s convictions with questions of biblical understanding and pastoral responsibility.

Is the book relevant beyond Romania?

Yes. Although its setting is Romanian, the story raises questions that Christians in many places encounter. In particular, its themes of perseverance, leadership, discernment, and community invite wider reflection.
