What should we choose and decide today? And why should we do that?
A Jewish story
A long time ago, in a far away kingdom lived a great king. However, this king was different from others. In his kingdom, as in any other country, he also had prisons for people who broke the law. But this king gave a strange rule to the people in his jails. He gave any prisoner one free day for every year of prison.
In one of his prisons was a Jewish man. Immediately after he was imprisoned his Rabbi came to visit him. The Jewish man asked the Rabbi a question: Rabbi, what day should I choose to be free? I am in great turmoil because I do not know what day to choose to be free. Should I choose to be free for my birthday to celebrate it with my family? Alternatively, is it better to pick my wife’s birthday? Or maybe the birthday of my firstborn? Perhaps is better to have the Passover day or the Day of Atonement free? Or one day for the feast of Tabernacles or when I have my marriage day celebration? I don’t know Rabbi, and I need your help.
The Rabbi looked him in the eyes and told him straightforward: Choose today. Today is the best day to be free. You don’t know if tonight or tomorrow you will die. Therefore, you do not miss today and be free.
Choose today to be free
So many of us like to procrastinate the hard and painful decisions of life. You know what I am talking about!
Procrastination is one of the biggest obstacles for progress. We self-sabotage our life, dream, vision, and future when we procrastinate. As a result we end up being in the same place— in a dead end.
Moreover, we continually tell ourselves and the others that tomorrow we will change: maybe quit smoking, or drinking alcohol, or start praying one hour a day, etc. Tomorrow is not ours— of course, today is not ours either. But if we are alive today we are responsible to make today matter!
Life is just a series of choices we make, someone well said. And every choice we make has consequences. So, choose wisely! The Bible is teaching us in Psalm 90:12 (TLV)
So teach us to number our days, so that we may get a heart of wisdom.
We need God to teach us how to live our lives in a way worthy of His Name. We need wisdom!
As we enter in 2019, I want to encourage you to choose today to make a change:
1. Choose today to build a strong relationship with God
In the last year I focused my writing on topics like the Word of God, prayer, worship, guidance, holiness, sin, God’s Presence. There is so much in my heart I want to share with you but I want to take it step by step.
Our relationship with God should be at the centre of our life. But too many of us procrastinate in making God our focus.
I want to encourage you to choose today to walk in obedience to God and choose Him over the pleasures of this world. Choose today to grow in faith, in good deeds, in discipline, and love for your neighbour. And choose today to put your life in the will of God and move out of your comfort zone, as Moses did one day.
2. Choose today to improve your life
So many people live their lives without a purpose or a goal. They just live and hope that one day they will be able to declare what the Apostle Paul said in 2 Timothy 4:7 (TLV)
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.
Apostle Paul knew what fight he was fighting and knew what race he ran. But many of us do not know. Do you know what God’s plan is for your life? Or at least part of it? Do you know your calling, gifts, or do you have a vision for your life? Do you know why you exist?
If you do not know how to answer to these questions then pray and seek God’s face. You only have one life to live so it is important to choose today to find out the answers to the above questions. And if you cannot figure out the answer try finding a life coach or a mentor to help you run your race.
I heard about Pastor Robert Morris who found his vision about the Gateway Church while a friend of his spent time with him and just asked him questions. A coach will help you set goals, and could help you live your life with a purpose in mind. Especially a Christian Coach. If you need a coach, do not hesitate to write me here.
3. Choose today to be free from pornography
There is no other day better than today to walk in freedom and choose freedom from the pornography bondage. You need to decide today how you want to continue your life. Do not postpone your liberty! You don’t know how much time you still have left. Therefore, make a change today and follow the ancient roads (Jeremiah 18:15) of the Scriptures- nothing more or less. Choose Jesus and the Gospel. However, choosing nothing is also a choice, but it is not a wise one. Don’t let the enemy make you believe you have time to change. Do not play with your eternity and choose wisely!
Once a man told me that he could not remain free more than 1-2 days without looking at pornography. I asked him if he indeed can stay free one day. He said that yes, of course, he can have one day with no pornography. I told him that if he can be free for one day, then he can remain free for two days too. And if he can be free for two days, he can stay free for four days also. If he can be free four days he can remain free for eight, then sixteen days, and later a whole month.
Moreover, he can remain free for the rest of his life! All he needs to do is take one day at a time! Remain free one day- today! Make today the day of your freedom!
Now what?
What you choose today matters and will make the difference if your life will be lived for God’s glory or not. I cannot choose in your place and you cannot choose in my place. We need to take responsibility for ourselves.
So, what will you choose? What are some of the areas you need to choose today to make a change? Feel free to share with me and with the readers of this blog some of the changes. Nevertheless, don’t forget that for some decisions you need help. So, do not procrastinate and ask for someone to help you!
I recommend you John Maxwell’s book- Today matters.
