Do you believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ? If yes, would you know how to explain to another your faith in the resurrection of Jesus? The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of the Christian faith.
Once, when I was in India, I had an interesting discussion with a religious Hindu man, somewhere in the city of Jeypore. And I was trying to share the Gospel with him and to be a witness. Therefore, I told him about Jesus and how He was born and lived a sinless life. Then, about His death, burial and resurrection and His ascension to the right hand of the Father.
After I finished my message, the man asked me: how do you know that Jesus rose from the dead and that He is alive? And to be honest, his question took me by surprise. Our discussion was quite lengthy, but I had the opportunity to share even more from the Scriptures with him and witness. However, after a while, I had to leave his place, and I do not know what happened to him anymore. I hope he found Jesus.
Nevertheless, I have a question for you: how would you have answered the question about the resurrection of Jesus? Do you know how to answer this question? It is essential to know how to answer, at least at a basic level. Therefore, I want to share with you a few tips on how to answer this question. However, always remember to let yourself led by the Spirit of God and not to rely on your wisdom and power. It is the Holy Spirit’s job to convince people.
Resurrection evidence #1: The Holy Scriptures
I know Jesus rose from the dead because the Bible says so. You might not think that this is a strong argument, but I believe this is the strongest! God gave me the grace to believe the Bible as the Word of God. However, always remember, that faith is also a choice.
All the four Gospels— Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John— speak about the resurrection of Jesus. In Matthew 28, the writer is presenting five pieces of evidence for the resurrection. The first one is an angel sent by God to bring a simple yet profound message- that Jesus is risen and the tomb is empty. The second one is the stone of the grave, that was moved. And who moved the stone? Not the Roman soldiers— they were there to guard it. And not the Pharisees, as they had no reason to do so, because they wanted Jesus inside. And not the disciples of Jesus, as they were too afraid and were hiding. Only God did that! This is the only explanation.
The third evidence was the Roman soldiers who did fall to the ground. The fourth evidence is the empty tomb. If the Pharisees had had the body of Jesus, they would have shown everybody their proof that Jesus has not risen. And the Roman soldiers did not fall asleep as they said because they would have been killed for such a mistake. And, as I said, the disciples were not up to such a task, to steal the body. The only plausible answer is that Jesus rose from the dead! And the fifth evidence is the women who did witness the empty tomb. All glory to God!
Resurrection evidence #2: Church history
We read in 1 Corinthians 15:6 (TLV)
He appeared to over five hundred brothers and sisters at one time
After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to many people: to the women at the tomb, to His disciples and many more. However, He did not appear to Pilate, the Pharisees, the high priest or Caesar. He appeared only to His friends and brothers.
And they saw His face, heard His voice, touched His body (John 20:27), and had lunch with Him (Luke 24:42-43). And now, His disciples believe that He is alive! Moreover, they were so convinced that they were ready to die for their faith in Jesus! And most of them did.
Matthew was burned alive for his faith; Mark was dragged by horses until he died, with a rope around his neck; Luke was hanged by an olive tree somewhere in Greece; Peter was crucified upside down; James was beheaded while the other James was thrown from the top of the Temple. Bartholomew was skinned alive; Andrew was crucified, and while he was crucified he was preaching the Gospel; Thomas was killed in India, etc. And not even one of them changed their story to renounce their faith in the risen Jesus!
This is telling me that something miraculous happened if the disciples of Jesus gave their life for this truth— that Jesus is alive. The first believers preferred death than to worship Caesar or the pagan gods. However, this is the story of many other believers of the last century, like Richard Wurmbrand (a Romanian Jew) or Brother Yun from China. Nevertheless, there are many more!
Resurrection evidence #3: Changed lives
However, no matter how many arguments one will present for the resurrection, in the end, one needs to share his testimony. This will make the resurrection of Jesus a personal matter, and by one’s testimony, one can become a living proof of the resurrection.
I said many times to my friends that in my opinion the greatest miracle that can happen is when I see someone’s character changed. I believe it is a great miracle when God is healing someone with cancer, or when God provides the much-needed finances miraculously for someone. However, nothing can compare with the wonder of salvation!
Therefore, when I see people saved today— 2000 years after the resurrection of Jesus— I count this as the most significant proof for the resurrection and for the fact that Jesus is alive and He is working today. A changed life is the best proof for a living Jesus!
Only God can give someone a new heart and a new life. And I know He changed my life after the moment I have met Him. And ever since I had met Him in 2009, I meet Him regularly, and He talks with me and guides my life. However, I am sure many of you can say the same thing.
Today hundreds of Jewish people and Muslim people are having an encounter with Jesus. Christianity is growing fast in countries like China, India, South America, Israel, and Africa. All over the world, God is moving with power. Therefore, the ever-increasing Kingdom of God on earth (Daniel 2:44-45) is another powerful proof for the resurrection of Jesus.
Now what?
I am sure the above points can help anyone, at a basic level, to present the resurrection of Jesus. The question is: will you do it?
I could say a lot more about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. However, I will stop here with my post. Nevertheless, I want to encourage you to go out and talk with people about the resurrection of Jesus. And do not forget that the Holy Spirit is with you and inside of you to empower you to be a witness of Jesus.
And the Holy Spirit will teach you how to speak, and He can guide your steps towards the people who need to hear the good news of the resurrection— that Jesus rose from the dead to never die again. Moreover, because He rose from the dead, it means that He is the sinless Son of God, the true Passover Lamb and that His words are worthy to take into consideration as the Word of God Himself because He is God.
