How to Have Fellowship With God: 4 Biblical Practices

How can you have fellowship with God? Fellowship with God is more than knowing facts about Him or simply reading the Bible. It is a living relationship in which we draw near to God through His Word, prayer, repentance, and the work of the Holy Spirit.

Scripture shows us practical ways to cultivate fellowship with God in our daily lives. Here are four biblical practices that can help us approach God’s Word not merely to gain information, but to know Him, hear His truth, and respond to Him in faith and obedience.

Not long after I became a believer, I attended a Christian youth conference at an important Church in my city. The speaker was one of the top Bible teachers in Romania and a man from whom I have learned a lot in the coming years.

At that conference, he taught us how one could have fellowship with God through the Holy Scriptures. He shared how he wakes up early every morning and starts with prayer and asks the Lord to guide him. Then, he starts reading his Bible. And when he senses that a particular verse ‘makes a click’ in his heart, he comes back to that verse and asks for more wisdom and understanding. Furthermore, he takes a piece of paper and writes everything he senses in his heart that God speaks to his life.

That was how he understood God is speaking to him….It seems pretty simple, right? Well, it is not that simple all the time. I want to share with you some of the things I practice and how I have fellowship with God through His Word.

1. Begin Your Fellowship With God Through Prayer

I like to pray Psalm 119:18 (TLV)

Open my eyes, so I may behold wonders from Your Torah.

The Bible is God’s Word. Therefore, we need the help of the Author of the Bible— the Holy Spirit— to read and understand His Word. In the flesh, nobody can understand the Bible beyond the intellectual level but only through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. We all need revelation! And revelation comes from the Lord, not from the flesh.

Furthermore, pray that He will transform your life through His Word and ask the Holy Spirit to teach you how to read it, apply and obey it. Moreover, ask God to make His words remain in you and guide you to share it with others. And ask Him to pour out love for His Word in your spirit and heart!

If you want to go deeper into this practice, I have also written about how to experience fellowship with God through the Word by slowing down, listening, reflecting, and responding to Scripture.

Whenever you draw closer to God’s Word, remember that you want to do it because you want to have fellowship with God— with a Person! And not with a book or yourself.

2. Approach God With Repentance and Honesty

Like in any other relationship, our fellowship with God needs to be rooted in humility, transparency, and honesty. Therefore, you do not want any blockage in your relationship with the Lord.

In my case, I never start meditating at God’s Word without first asking His Spirit to search my heart while I read the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20 or other similar passages. Moreover, I want to encourage you to go to God as you are and ask Him if there is anything you need to confess and repent before Him. And do not skip this step if you want to hear God’s voice and get His revelation. No one can say they have a good relationship with God, but they cannot speak with their fellow men!

Often when I cannot hear His words and sense His Presence, I ask Him what is the cause. And often He reveals to me a sin I did not confess or a person I did not forgive or reconcile with.

3. Ask Questions as You Read God’s Word

It is essential to ask questions in your time of fellowship with God. Especially when you study the Bible. Do you remember King David in Psalm 15:1 (TLV)?

Adonai, who may dwell in Your tent? Who may live on Your holy mountain?

When David had fellowship with God, he asked questions. And so must we!

Some of the most important questions are: What is the text telling me? What is the text teaching me about God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit? Moreover, what attitudes do I need to develop? How is this passage applying to myself and my generation? What does God want me to know about myself? What does He want me to do?

Talk to God about the written text. In time you will learn how to better hear God’s voice and will start thinking like God is thinking in the Bible. Indeed, He is transforming your mind and heart while you do that!

And remember to keep Jesus and the gospel in the center of your meditation and fellowship.

4. Continue Walking With God Throughout the Day

Of course, the lines above represents an approach I have learned from other people who are more advanced in their walk with God than me and ever since I practice them my life has changed. However, to the aforementioned things, you can add the wisdom you received and have fellowship with God in a more personalized way.

Every now and then I take my old notebooks and papers with the meditations I received from the Lord in the time I spent with Him. And every time I look over them I sense God’s Presence and I am encouraged.

How to Have Fellowship With God Every Day

Start feeding on the Word of God and make it a habit to have fellowship with Him through His Word. Ask Him to open up His Word for your heart and your heart for His Word! And do that for the right motives— for His glory!

Somone said that most Christians do not have fellowship with God. They have fellowship with each another about God. Think if this is true in your life.

Maybe you say that you do not have time to fellowship with God. However, I want to encourage you to make time for the only Person in the universe who genuinely loves you and cherish you! Do not miss a day without spending time with your Creator and Father!

Do you agree?
