God has a plan for your life. Do you know God’s plan for you? As believers in Yeshua we are taught that God has a general will and a specific will/plan for our lives; and it is His desire for us to discover His plan. However, to discover His plan for our lives is often a journey.
God has a plan for you
After I became a believer I traveled to the UK to visit a friend. And he took me to a famous Church in London—a Church I always wanted to visit. Before we arrived at Church I prayed to God and asked Him to speak to my heart.
You see, after I became a believer, I got involved in many Church activities—because that’s what I was told to do if I wanted to know God more. But after a while I began asking myself: God, is that all that is? God, what is the next step? Even though I was involved in so many activities I did not see God nor did I know Him better. Moreover, I felt I had no clear direction, vision or purpose. I wondered if God really had a plan for me.
That evening the Pastor preached about God’s plan for all of His children—that is to grow. I think that’s one way of saying it. And that evening I felt tremendously encouraged to know that God has a general plan for me.
Indeed, the Bible says that God has a plan for His children (Jeremiah 29:11, TLV):
For I know the plans that I have in mind for you,” declares Adonai, “plans for shalom and not calamity—to give you a future and a hope.
Romans 8:28 (TLV)
Now we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to His purpose.
God has a plan for all His children
There is a plan God has for all of His children—nobody is an exception. This is what some theologians call the general will/plan of God. Whenever you are confused about your life and don’t know where to go it is always good and wise to ask yourself if you are in His general will. Indeed, ask yourself if there is any dissobedience from His will as you find it in the Bible. God will reveal His specific will only after you put your life in His general will first.
By the expression the general will of God I mean the will of God as you find it in the Bible from the book of Genesis to the book of Revelation. As I wrote in one of my previous posts, God’s will is for you to be saved. There is nothing more important than becoming a child of God! Needless to say, we all merited eternal punishment for our sins but through the sacrifice of Yeshua the penalty of death passed over us.
When I say God has a plan for His children I also think of 1 Thessalonians 4:3 (TLV)
For this is the will of God—your sanctification:to abstain from sexual immorality
God’s plan for His children is that they would live a holy and pure life. That’s why I wrote quite a few posts on my blog about sexual sin and sexual purity. God’s plan is to fight the good fight of faith, surrender our lives to Him and walk in the Spirit.

The way we live matters to God—don’t believe anything else. If someone would ask you right now if you live in God’s will—how would you answer? Maybe you don’t know His specific will for you right now but to the best of your knowledge do you live your life in God’s general will, the way you read about it in the Holy Scriptures?
The most important thing is to do what you know—do what is written, before even asking God about His specific will. As you walk in God’s general will for you He will reveal His specific will to you. 1 Tessalonians 5:18 (TLV)
in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Messiah Yeshua.
You can’t get more clear than that. A life lived in holiness and full of praises and thankgiving will attract God’s blessings to you.
God has a plan and a calling for you. Make sure you don’t miss His plan by despising His Word.
In the words of William Barclay
The call that comes to a Christian has a double direction. It is a calling from heaven and it is a calling to heaven. It is a voice which comes from God and calls us to God. And it is a call which demands concentrated attention because of both its origin and its destination. A man cannot afford to give a disinterested glance to an invitation to God from God.
God has a plan and the world has a plan
The Bible talks a lot more about the plans God has for His children. However, the enemy of our souls does not sleep either. Satan and the world have a plan too—to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). Needeless to say, Satan and his agents want to drag you into sin of all kinds—especially sexual sin. The world wants to keep you busy so that you will not have time to cultivate your relationship with God through Yeshua. Often, Satan will use people in your family and your congregation to make you stumble and not walk in God’s general will for you. I am sure you know what I am talking about!
But God has a plan too—the plan of Yeshua (John 10:10) is for us to have life and life abundantly. Sin has a way to defile our lives and hinder our walk with God. Moreover, sin has a way to make God look small and deformed and to make the world and its plans attractive. As long as we live we will experience the tension between the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkenss. Thank God we are on the winning side! The Bible says in Romans 6:14 (TLV)
For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.
Now what?
God has a plan for you. And please do not read Jeremiah 29:11 and imagine a big house, a luxurious car and no problems for the rest of your life. People who are into the prosperity gospel believe that. Many read Jeremiah 29:11 or other similar verses and immediately think of the American Dream. However, God’s plan for His children has nothing to do with the American Dream but it has everything to do with the cross of Yeshua.
God is more interested in our sanctification than for us to have a house—by the way, there is nothing wrong in owning a house. But God is interested in us living for His glory, in exalting His Name and doing His will as we find it in the Bible. When we walk by faith in obedience to Him, God is pleased.
Every day we all find ourselves in the position of choosing the will of God and His plan or choosing the will of this world. Let us choose wisely—let us choose the plan inspired by the Spirit of God and God’s Word.
Do you believe that right now you live your life in God’s general will for you? God has a plan for you—be wise and accept His plan and walk in it.
