Wisdom for the battle with pornography. In my post I will share two things any winner knows. It is crucial to have an accountability partner and what I call a ‘battle journal.’ I hope you will find these two things helpful in your own battle for purity.

Wisdom for the battle against pornography

I remember meeting a Pastor in Israel. He told me a story. He said he was having a coffee in the back yard of his house. And he looked over the fence and saw three trees he had planted several years ago. As he looked to the trees and admired them, he observed that the tree in the middle was a little smaller than the other two. And he asked himself why is this so, because he planted all three of them at the same time, in the same garden and soil. He had the idea to walk behind the trees and look at them from a different angle and perspective. As he got behind them he saw that the middle tree was not doing very well. Some parasite plants were sucking the life out of it and they needed to be cut off. If not the tree would not be able to grow and develop in what it was supposed to become.

Then the Pastor asked me if there were things in my life I needed  to cut off and remove; things that kept me from growing into a mature believer and things that  kept me from becoming all that God designed me to be. And I knew the answer to that question. I knew I had to, somehow, get rid of my sinful behaviour once and for all.

Wisdom teaches us about accountability

Often it’s hard to cut off things in our lives that damage us. Therefore, we need help. We need the help of God and other believers. We need to humble ourselves and ask for help.

In Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (ESV) we read

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!

These verses speak about team-work! Our walk of freedom from sin is often a battle and we need each other. The enemy will try to convince you that you need to fight alone but the Word of God is not teaching us this. Find someone who can fight alongside you until you find freedom!

In Hebrews 3:13 (ESV) we read:

But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

I was blessed to have someone in my life to pray with about my struggle. I feel sorry for any person out there who feels alone and who believes there is no one in his life to whom he or she can share the burden of their sin. And I would like to challenge you not to accept this situation because I believe there is a person in your life somewhere who would be open to fight this battle alongside you. Continue to pray about it and ask for God’s wisdom and guidance!

Accountability is the only way

When you have another person in your life with who you can talk freely about your failures, and if that person is a mature believer, then you can learn many things about walking in purity. Because when your accountability partner starts asking you questions your mind will start to understand why you have fallen down and what you can improve on. In the end, this is one of the purposes of having a partner.

It is important to stop and analyse your life after you fall, because you want to learn about the weak spots in your life. If you do not do that, don’t worry, because the enemy will do it. He will observe your life and will do anything to pull you back into his kingdom. And when we talk with our accountability partner about our weaknesses we can see things from their perspective too and learn from them. Indeed, we all have blind spots.

One of your partners can also include your wife. I know about a Pastor who said that whenever he is sexually tempted he calls his wife and asks her to pray for him. Whoever your partner is, make sure you are honest and totally open about your issue. And make sure you will not feel hurt by any question he might ask you (Prov. 27:17). It is also important in the beginning to meet and talk with him more often until you can find balance.

Wisdom for the battle—start a journal

It was very helpful for me to journal my victories and failures and start learning from them, and by asking questions. And then by bringing them to the Lord in prayer and asking for His mind, wisdom and strategies on how to overcome the snares of the enemy next time. It made a tremendous difference.

My advice for you in this post is to start implementing these two things: having an accountability partner and journaling your walk with the Lord. Start being wiser! Move into the offensive mode and take action. Ask for grace and for the help of the Holy Spirit, focus on Jesus and continue your walk with God. Moreover, ask the help of mature believers (Prov. 11:14, 15:22). Proverbs 24:6 (ESV) says clearly

for by wise guidance you can wage your war, and in abundance of counselors there is victory.

If you will not apply these two things you may not experience total victory. However, if you want to win this war apply Proverbs 24:6! And learn from others who are already walking in the light and in purity!

Hebrews 10:23-25 (ESV)

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Use wisdom in your battle with pornography.
